Ciara - Positive Caesarean Birth in Cork
This was my first pregnancy, and I was booked at CUMH in Cork. Unfortunately, my pregnancy was difficult from the beginning.
I had severe nausea and vomiting and was on medication for this but it never fully went away. Also, there is a family history of pre-eclampsia and high blood pressure, so it was at the back of my mind that I might experience this as well. From about 30 weeks my blood pressure was high intermittently so I was closely monitored for this, but didn't need medication at that time.
I was tested three times for gestational diabetes due to my baby measuring large (over the 99th centile), and on the third test it was positive and I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Luckily I was able to control my blood sugars with diet alone and didn't need any medication.
At my 36 week appointment, it was discovered that my baby was in an unstable lie. I was admitted to hospital that day for observation in case my waters would go and baby wouldn't be in a good position. I found the stay in hospital incredibly difficult to deal with mentally, and I really struggled during that time. I would say it was the lowest point of my whole experience by far. I stayed in hospital until I was 38+1 weeks and then I luckily was able to go home for 2 nights before my birth.
I had an elective c-section because my baby was in a transverse position. Knowing it I was planned gave me the space to prepare emotionally and mentally for the birth. From the moment I walked into the theatre, I felt completely safe and reassured. The team took the time to introduce themselves and explain each step of the process, which helped calm my nerves and turn the moment into something truly magical. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who played a part in delivering my baby safely, it was an amazing experience.
Unfortunately, postnatally my blood pressure became out of control and I needed to be put on medication for about 2 months.
Despite all this, my baby boy is a happy and healthy toddler now who is thriving and keeping us on our toes every day ❤️
